Dropbox for Teams
If you use Dropbox Business or Dropbox Teams, connecting to Producer Dashboard works slightly differently than with a personal account. Team accounts have additional layers of structure that can affect how the connection works.
How team accounts differ
Section titled “How team accounts differ”Dropbox Business and Teams accounts have a concept called namespaces. A namespace is essentially a separate file space within your team’s Dropbox. Common namespaces include:
- Team space — shared with all team members
- Member folder — your personal folder within the team account
- Team folders — specific shared folders created by your admin
Producer Dashboard needs to know which namespace to create its folder in. For personal accounts, there is only one namespace, so it is automatic. For team accounts, it may need guidance.
Namespace detection
Section titled “Namespace detection”When you connect a Dropbox Teams account, Producer Dashboard attempts to detect the correct namespace automatically. In most cases, it identifies your member folder (your personal space within the team) and creates the /PRODUCER-DASHBOARD/ folder there.
If automatic detection succeeds, you will not notice any difference from a personal account connection.
When automatic detection fails
Section titled “When automatic detection fails”Some team configurations prevent automatic namespace detection. If this happens:
- Producer Dashboard shows a message explaining that it could not detect the correct namespace.
- A folder picker appears, showing the available namespaces and folders in your team Dropbox.
- Select the location where you want the Producer Dashboard folder to be created.
- Click Confirm.
Choose a location where you have write access and that makes sense for your workflow. Your personal member folder is usually the best choice.
Admin permissions
Section titled “Admin permissions”Depending on your team’s Dropbox settings, you may encounter permission restrictions:
Connecting may require admin approval
Section titled “Connecting may require admin approval”Some Dropbox Business admins restrict which third-party apps team members can connect. If you see a “This app is not approved” message:
- Contact your Dropbox admin and ask them to approve Producer Dashboard
- Your admin can do this from the Dropbox Business admin console under Settings > App management
File access restrictions
Section titled “File access restrictions”Team admins can control whether external apps can access certain folders or namespaces. If Producer Dashboard cannot create its folder:
- Check with your admin about app file access permissions
- Ask for access to your member folder at minimum
Data governance policies
Section titled “Data governance policies”Some organisations have data governance policies that restrict where files can be stored. If your organisation has these policies:
- Confirm that storing music production files via a third-party app is permitted
- Work with your IT team to identify an appropriate location
Common issues with team accounts
Section titled “Common issues with team accounts”“Could not determine root namespace”: This means automatic detection failed. Use the manual folder picker to select a location.
“Insufficient permissions”: Your team admin has restricted third-party app access. Contact them to approve Producer Dashboard.
Folder created in wrong location: Disconnect, reconnect, and use the manual folder picker to choose the correct namespace.
Collaborator sharing not working: If shared files are not accessible to your collaborators, the folder may be in a team-restricted namespace. Move it to a location with the appropriate sharing permissions.
Connection works but files are not visible in Dropbox app: Check that you are looking at the correct namespace in your Dropbox app. Team accounts can have multiple spaces, and files might be in your team space rather than your personal folder.
- Connect to your personal member folder, not the team space, unless you specifically want team-wide access to your production files.
- If you are unsure about permissions, ask your Dropbox admin before connecting.
- Test the connection by sharing a single track before relying on it for important collaborations.
- If your organisation is strict about data, discuss with your IT team first.
