Splits & Rights
Splits define who owns what. Getting them right early saves headaches later. Producer Dashboard lets you set master and publishing splits for every collaborator on a track, then export that data when you need it.
Master vs. publishing splits
Section titled “Master vs. publishing splits”There are two types of ownership to track:
- Master splits define ownership of the sound recording itself. This is typically split among the producer, artist, and label.
- Publishing splits define ownership of the underlying composition — the melody and lyrics. This is split among songwriters, composers, and publishers.
Each collaborator on a track can have separate percentages for master and publishing.
Setting split percentages
Section titled “Setting split percentages”- Open the collaborators widget or detail modal for your track.
- Click on a collaborator to expand their details.
- Enter their master split percentage.
- Enter their publishing split percentage.
- Click Save.
Splits update instantly on the track. You can see a summary of all splits in the collaborators widget.
The 100% rule
Section titled “The 100% rule”Master splits should total 100% across all collaborators. Publishing splits should also total 100%. Producer Dashboard shows you the current total as you edit, so you can see at a glance whether things add up.
If your totals do not reach 100%, you will see a warning. This usually means someone is missing from the credits.
If your totals exceed 100%, you will also see a warning. This typically means a percentage needs adjusting.
Auto-allocate splits
Section titled “Auto-allocate splits”Do not want to do the math? Click the Auto-Allocate button to split percentages evenly among all collaborators on the track.
For example:
- 2 collaborators: 50% / 50%
- 3 collaborators: 33.33% / 33.33% / 33.34%
- 4 collaborators: 25% each
Auto-allocate sets the same percentage for both master and publishing. You can adjust individual numbers afterward if the split is not actually even.
Viewing splits at a glance
Section titled “Viewing splits at a glance”The collaborators widget shows a summary bar for each track:
- Each collaborator’s name and their percentage
- A visual bar showing the split proportions
- Color-coded segments so you can quickly see the breakdown
This gives you an instant read on ownership without opening any modals.
Exporting splits for PRO registration
Section titled “Exporting splits for PRO registration”Producer Dashboard can export your split data in formats accepted by performing rights organizations:
| Organization | Region | Export Format |
|---|---|---|
| BMI | United States | BMI works registration format |
| ASCAP | United States | ASCAP works registration format |
| SESAC | United States | SESAC submission format |
| PRS | United Kingdom | PRS works notification format |
To export:
- Select the tracks you want to export splits for.
- Open the export menu.
- Choose your PRO format.
- Download the file and submit it to your PRO.
This saves significant time compared to manually entering split information on PRO websites for every song.
Common split scenarios
Section titled “Common split scenarios”Here are some typical arrangements you might encounter:
Solo producer/artist:
- Master: 100% to you
- Publishing: 100% to you
Producer + vocalist (50/50 deal):
- Master: 50% producer, 50% vocalist
- Publishing: 50% producer, 50% vocalist
Full band with outside songwriter:
- Master: Split among band members
- Publishing: Songwriter gets writing credit, band splits the rest
Work-for-hire engineer:
- Master: 0% (engineer is paid a flat fee)
- Publishing: 0%
- Still listed as collaborator for credits
- Set splits as early as possible. Conversations about ownership get harder the closer you get to release.
- Use accurate percentages, not rough estimates. PROs need exact numbers.
- If a collaborator is work-for-hire with no ownership stake, you can still add them with 0% splits to maintain accurate credits.
- Export and review your split sheets before submitting to a PRO. A quick review catches errors.
